Bands, Duos and Trios The auditions are not to establish the musician's sight reading and technical playing abilities; the emphasis is on performance, personality and displaying a diverse musical repertoire, as such this audition should be more like watching the group in a live performance. We don't want to give a list of songs to perform, we would rather suggest the types and styles of music, but allow the personality of the individual band to come through on the DVD. Due to the varied requirements of each individual cruise line, the age, look, sound and material of the band will somewhat dictate where they will be most successful. However, there are certain basic requirements for most of the cruise lines. The Song titles are just suggestions; the band should choose songs in this style from their existing repertoire. Vocal and instrumental performances are required; most bands tend to use instrumentals for strict tempo dancing and vocals for the other styles, it is also possible to combine songs to display two genres of music i.e. Summertime could be used as a ballad and a jazz standard.

Bands, Duos and Trios -
These auditions are not to establish the musician's sight reading and technical playing abilities; the emphasis is on performance, personality and displaying a diverse musical repertoire, as such this audition should be more like watching the group in a live performance. As we discussed I don't want to give a list of songs to perform, I would rather suggest the types and styles of music, but allow the personality of the individual band to come through on the DVD. Bands - Again, bands need to be versatile, but are normally expected to be more "high-energy" as such they will focus on the Country, Pop and Rock styles. They should be capable of playing Jazz standards, Background and Music for Dancing, but this should be addressed in the first 10 to 15 minutes of the DVD. Again, it's important that the personality of the band shows through, the lines are looking for lively interactive bands that have a good rapport with the audiences. The 30 - 45 minute DVD of live performance should include the styles detailed below. It is best if the groups are capable of performing all styles, but should concentrate on the areas which best suit their style. Here are the styles - again the Song list is a guide to the type of material, but we want to hear tunes from their own set list. Strict Tempo dancing - Waltz, Latin, (Moon River, Tenderly, Blue Bossa, Wave, Girl from Ipanema etc) Ballad - (Misty, Summertime) Jazz Standards - (All the Things You Are, Take the A-train) Country - (Crazy, Achy Breaky Heart) Rock 'n' Roll - (Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes, Rock Around the Clock) Soul, R&B - (Proud Mary, Mustang sally Midnight Hour) Rock, Pop & Disco - (Dancing Queen, Hotel California, I Will Survive - to present day) The "look" of the band is very important; they should wear formal attire but may wish to change into lounge suit for the more modern numbers (it is fine to stop the video as long as the songs are recorded live) also, girls should wear clothes suitable for evening wear onboard cruise ships. String Quartets & Solo Performers - Piano, Harp, Vibes and Guitar: Due to the nature of solo performers, with the exception of Guitarists (who occasionally perform with the showband) these players do not need to sight read music. They are required to play background music usually through out the day time. As such, a large repertoire of Background, Easy listening, Jazz, Light Classical and Show tunes. The DVD should be in Formal attire and 30 to 45 minutes in length.
